Will This Be the Final Word on Whether Bert and Ernie Are Gay? Famed Puppeteer States: ‘I Created Bert. I Know What and Who He Is’ — Then Attempts to End the Debate

Even after the Sesame Workshop came out with a seemingly definitive declaration, the debate over whether Bert and Ernie of “Sesame Street” are gay refuses to go away. But when famed puppeteer Frank Oz added his voice to the fray Tuesday, he seemed determined to settle the issue once and for all.

“I created Bert. I know what and who he is,” Oz wrote on Twitter after the debate flared up this week following a comment by former “Sesame Street” writer Mark Saltzman suggesting the puppets are gay.

Oz added in one of his many tweets on the subject: “It seems Mr. Mark Saltzman was asked if Bert & Ernie are gay. It’s fine that he feels they are. They’re not, of course. But why that question? Does it really matter? Why the need to define people as only gay? There’s much more to a human being than just straightness or gayness.”

But Oz’s effort to settle the debate appears to have fallen short. He quickly found himself engaged in a spirited back-and-forth with other Twitter users with varying opinions on the matter, which can be found here.
