CNN Chief Lashes Out at White House; Chaos at CNN’s NY Headquarters Captured on Video

In the wake of a bomb scare that forced the evacuation of CNN’s New York bureau for five hours today following the discovery of an explosive device, CNN chief Jeff Zucker lashed out at the White House for a “total and complete lack of understanding” of the seriousness of its attacks on the media, the AP reports.

“Feelings were raw at the cable network because of a what it believed was a reluctance by the administration to discuss CNN as one of the targets of crude devices sent to political leaders, and the delivery of a fundraising email that attacked CNN that arrived in inboxes of supporters as the story unfolded. Trump’s campaign later apologized for the email,” the AP reports.

Zucker, the president of CNN Worldwide, is quoted saying: “The president, and especially the White House press secretary, should understand their words matter. Thus far, they have shown no comprehension of that.”

The report notes that the package sent to CNN was “in one respect a case of mistaken identity.”

“The package that included the explosive device and an envelope containing white powder was addressed to former CIA director John Brennan, a frequent Trump critic,” the AP notes. “Brennan is actually a contracted analyst at NBC News, although the package’s street address was for the Time Warner Center in New York’s Columbus Circle, where CNN’s offices are.”

CNN’s Jim Sciutto and Poppy Harlow were on the air this morning reporting on the suspicious packages sent to political leaders when an alarm went off in their building, prompting them to evacuate. Some of the ensuing chaos is captured in a report posted by Inside Edition, below …

  1. “total and complete lack of understanding”.
Well Jeff, it looks like that goes both ways.

  2. Jeff, if you and your crew took the necessary courses at Trump University …
you would be fully prepared for what’s going on right now …
when you learn to speak “Trump”, you will get a better
perspective on Trump U courses like, “How to Cheat
to Get Ahead” and “Fraud 101” … amazing education
    in today’s America!

  3. It will be interesting to find out who sent the bombs and most particularly, why? None of the bombs exploded. All were sent to addresses that have security in place. The sender must have known the bombs would not explode and would not reach the addressee. These “letter bombs” were designed to fail. Why were they sent? Was it a Republican sympathizer trying to scare Democrats or a Democratic sympathizer trying to get sympathy for Democratic candidates? It could be either way. Only time will tell.

  4. Last night the President called for Democrats and Republicans to come together to condemn political violence. I have not seen similar sentiments from politicians on the other side of the aisle.

  5. President Trump called for the country to come together to condemn violence in politics. I am waiting to hear similar sentiments from the other side of the aisle.

    • No, president Trump took a short break from deepening the divisions to pay lip service to this bump in his schedule.

  6. Skeptical, I myself have considered the same thing (along with other scenarios). It will be interesting to see what the investigation yields and how quickly we are informed of the results.
