HBO detailed plans today for the upcoming season of crime series “True Detective,” which premieres Sunday, Jan. 13, at 9 p.m.

“The new season tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods,” HBO said. The season, the third in the series, will consist of eight episodes.

Mahershala Ali stars as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. Carmen Ejogo and Stephen Dorff also star. The show is created by Nic Pizzolatto.
