ABC is working on a sequel to its drama “NYPD Blue” that will revolve around the son of Andy Sipowicz, played in the original series by Dennis Franz. Nellie Andreeva reports on Deadline that the network has given a pilot production commitment to the project.

“The reboot hails from ‘NYPD Blue’ alums Matt Olmstead, Nick Wootton and Jesse Bochco,” Andreeva writes. “The pilot, a co-production between 20th Century Fox TV, which was behind the original series, and ABC Studios, is already casting its four main roles of NYPD cops, led by Theo.”

Andreeva adds: “Unfortunately for all Andy Sipowicz fans, in the sequel his character is dead. The return of ‘NYPD Blue’ follows his son, Theo, as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder. Theo seems to have taken after his father as he too is a hard-drinking, hard-headed and quick-witted cop.”

  1. Read: Dennis Franz is too old demo-wise.

  2. If Dennis Franz is too old demo-wise, then so are most all the adult viewers who watched the original series in the 1990s. What audience is the re-boot series trying to appeal to? Most of the younger demo audience, would have been too young to see the original in the 1990s.
