Why the Most Famous Kiss in Animation History Would Be Unacceptable in Today’s World

A famous animated kiss — make that the most famous animated kiss — would be considered inappropriate in the post-#MeToo world, say some observers — including a former Disney princess.

Kristen Bell, who played Disney’s Anna in “Frozen,” talked about the kiss in “Snow White” as part of a discussion of parenting in an interview with Parents magazine. You may recall — the sleeping Snow White, having eaten a poisoned apple, is awakened by a non-consensual kiss from a prince.

Bell, who has been starring lately in the hit NBC comedy “The Good Place,” said she reads every night to her young daughters, Lincoln, 5, and Delta, 3. But she expressed concerns about mixed signals in some of the Disney storylines.

“Every time we close ‘Snow White’ I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s weird that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got that apple?’ I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger, would you?’ And my kids are like, ‘No!’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m doing something right,'” Bell told the publication.

She said she has also asked her daughters: “Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? Because you can not kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”

The New York Post observes that Bell is “not the only actress who’s questioning Disney movies. Keira Knightley recently told Ellen DeGeneres that her 3-year-old daughter, Edie, is ‘banned’ from watching ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Little Mermaid.’”

The Post reports that Knightley, 33, “said the 1950s Cinderella character ‘waits around for a rich guy to rescue her. Don’t! Rescue yourself. Obviously!’”

  1. A recent survey showed that 65-80% of Americans, (actual percentage is based on demographic) are tired of political correctness. This is a great example of why. Things like this are one of the reasons that #MeToo is losing its momentum. Rather than staying focused on the real issue of sexual harassment, celebs are saying stupid things like this and calling it #MeToo.

  2. I totally agree with “guilty cleric” There are soooo many bigger issues that we need to address with our children. Now more than ever!!! I am a firm believer in “if you don’t like or agree with something you see online, on TV or in movies simply DON’T WATCH IT,!!! But oh wait because your a celebrity your word is gold!! Na!!!!! I don’t think so….. Let me get this straight I’m sure this actress watched these movies when she was young, did she simply forget about those scenes??? I’m sure not!! But you let your children watch anyway, and now your appalled? OH REALLY??

  3. TOTALLY ABSURD !! 🙂 WHEN YOU’R HUSBAND, PARTNER HELP AROUND THE HOUSE DO U SCREAM STOP & FIGHT OVER WHO DOES WHAT? TOP THAT AND PEOPLE ARE SO UPSET ABOUT CINDERELLA & THIS KISS FROM A PRINCE IN A CARTOON OR MOVIE? WHAT IS TOTALLY DISGUSTING IS THAT “GROSS OUT T.V. SHOW “THE KARDASHIAN’S” NOW! TRY COMPARING “THE SKANK SHOW” TO CINDERELLA!!! UUGH THIS HAS GONE TO FAR!

  4. I agree, Cinderella and snow white are just unpractical fantasy! ! Understand fantasy! ! Its a fictional stories to entertain your children before they go to bed, for they can know…there is a happy ending!! We grew up on that.please, you wanna be snooty celebs…let it go , don’t messed with the fantasy of your children, you can teach those other lessons in other ways. Plus, hate to say it, children that are taught don’t except candy or go with a stranger still do!! You need to focus on that!!

  5. If Kristen Bell is so concerned about mixed signals in some of the Disney storylines, why would she name one of her daughters, “Lincoln”?. Talk about “mixed signals!”. (I’m still scratching my head about that one). A Fairy Tale is just that…it’s not reality; it’s using your imagination. That particular Prince’s Kiss (every little girl’s dream) was magical and saved Snow White’s life. If a kiss can save a life, what’s wrong with that?”

  6. Ubelievable, maybe true young women today or wow any day don’t want to be molested awake or asleep, but that kiss was to save her life, undo an evil spell cast by her jealous stepmother, so ugh whatever. Please stop buying into the #metoo revisionary view of art, film, literature. Snow White is still the masterpiece it always was.
