Why a Satanic Group Is Suing Netflix and Warner Bros.

A group of satanists has filed a lawsuit against Netflix and Warner Bros. Entertainment seeking “at least” $50 million along with an injunction. Deadline reports that the Satanic Temple filed the suit in federal court today over a statue appearing in the new series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”

The report quotes the complaint, written by lawyer Bruce Lederman on behalf of the temple, stating: “This case presents, among other things, a textbook example of the hornbook explanation of copyright protection that copyright law protects unique expressions, but not the ideas themselves. What makes this case particularly striking and significant is that it arises in the context of Defendants who are highly sophisticated media production and distribution companies which blatantly misappropriated Plaintiff’s unique expression of an idea even though they have a long history of vigorously protecting their own intellectual property.”

Deadline adds: “Really, this all comes down to a depiction of the goat-headed ‘historical deity’ Baphomet, which the Satanic Temple says it created in part ‘to promote First Amendment values of separation of church and state and equal protection.’”

The report says a similar-looking statue appears in the series, at the Academy of the Unseen Arts that Kiernan Shipka attends as Sabrina.

Lucien Greaves, identified on Twitter as co-founder and spokesperson for the Satanic Temple, confirmed the pending legal action last month, ahead of today’s filing, in a tweet, which you can see below …
