Kevin Spacey made a most unexpected and inexplicable “comeback” of sorts after being out of the public eye since allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced against the actor more than a year ago. Spacey posted a bizarre video on YouTube on Christmas Eve in which he adopts his “House of Cards” character, Frank Underwood, in an apparent attempt to defend himself.

Slate notes that the video surfaced just after details about the first criminal charge stemming from the allegations against Spacey were reported by the Boston Globe. “The charge is due to an incident that allegedly occurred in July 2016 with the son of a former Boston news anchor, Heather Unruh,” Slate reports.

“Spacey is scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of indecent assault and battery on Jan. 7,” Slate adds. “He could face up to five years in prison and be required to register as a sex offender.”

The video, in which Spacey delivers a monologue while wearing a Santa Claus apron, is titled “Let Me Be Frank.” In it, Spacey says: “I know what you want. You want me back. Of course, some believed everything and have just been waiting with bated breath to hear me confess it all. They’re just dying to have me declare that everything said is true and that I got what I deserved. Wouldn’t that be easy if it was all so simple? Only you and I both know it’s never that simple. Not in politics and not in life. But you wouldn’t believe the worst without evidence, would you? You wouldn’t rush to judgments without facts, would you? Did you?”

Slate notes: “Throughout the creepy video, Spacey appears to try to defend himself with a script and a tone of voice that makes it seem like he’s trying to get away with something.”
