Peak TV Tipping Point: Now There Are More Scripted Originals on Streaming Than on Basic Cable or Broadcast, as the Total Number of Shows Sets a Record

The number of scripted original series on TV has hit a record high, and for the first time the number of shows on streaming services tops both basic cable and broadcast TV.

The numbers are contained in the just-released annual report on the state of scripted television by FX Networks. The total number of scripted originals in 2018 is 495, up from 487 in 2017, which was a record at the time. FX CEO John Landgraf predicted back in January that the number would hit 520 this year, so the total fell short of expectations.

Streaming services — Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Apple and others — accounted for 32% of all originals, up from 25% a year ago. Broadcast was responsible for 30%, basic cable 29% and premium cable 9%. The number of shows break down this way: streaming, 160 shows; broadcast, 146; basic cable, 144; and premium cable, 45.
