Following the death of James Gandolfini, the original Tony Soprano, the character will be played by Gandolfini’s son Michael Gandolfini in “The Many Saints of Newark,” a feature film prequel to the groundbreaking HBO series “The Sopranos.”

“Michael Gandolfini will play a younger version of the iconic character his late father played on the HBO series,” the AP reports. “The 19-year-old actor has had a recurring role on HBO’s ‘The Deuce.’”

The younger Gandolfini is quoted in a statement saying it’s “a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy.”

“The Sopranos” aired from 1999-2007 on HBO, wrapping after six seasons. James Gandolfini, whose mob boss Tony Soprano was the central figure in the drama series, died of a heart attack in 2013 at age 51.

“Sopranos” creator David Chase is on board as producer and screenwriter on New Line’s “The Many Saints of Newark,” with Alan Taylor, who directed several episodes of “The Sopranos,” set to direct.
