Bob Costas Is Out at NBC

After a legendary career as a sports broadcaster with NBC, Bob Costas and the network have severed ties. The move had been in the works for months — we reported back in August that talks were under way to wrap up Costas’ 39-year career with NBC.

The New York Post reports that the separation is now official, with Costas telling the publication: “It’s all settled quietly and happily for all concerned,”

“Costas, 66, will continue on the MLB Network, where he is set to be a big part of the Baseball Hall of Fame inductee announcement in the next week,” The Post reports. “He also will call about 20 games on play-by-play for MLBN. Plus, he is exploring doing a sports/news interview-style show.”

Said Costas: “If I do anything else, it will be a hybrid of my HBO show and ‘Later.’”

“Costas had triggered a so-called ‘Brokaw clause’ in 2012, which made him the emeritus of NBC Sports,” The Post reports. “In recent years, the two sides struggled to find roles that Costas felt passionate about and that fit into NBC’s current properties. Baseball has always been Costas’ No. 1 sport, while his feelings for the NFL have waned.”

The report adds: “Costas’ exact payout is unknown. When asked for specifics, Costas said the final finances of the settlement were reconciled ‘more than fairly.’ The agreement was made late last year, but NBC and Costas decided to keep the parting quiet.”

  1. Very talented and a class guy. Just one problem…he likes the Cardinals.

  2. Oh…another issue. Costas once thought Michael Jordan’s wife (ex-wife) was Michael’s mother.
    That was a big no-no.

  3. I’ll never forget Costas’s eulogy for Mickey Mantle. Costas was brilliant and captured the emotion that every fan was feeling about the Mick. I even remember where I was when I heard it. Costas will always have a place in my heart.
