The daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. came out against the firing of meteorologist Jeremy Kappell by WHEC-TV in Rochester, N.Y. As has been widely reported, Kappell was fired after he said the words “Martin Luther C–n King Jr.” on the air.
Dr. Bernice King commented on the incident in an interview with TMZ, suggesting there would have been a better way to handle it.
“I believe that when these racial slurs occur, unless there’s a situation where it’s continual, that people need an opportunity to be rehabilitated, and we don’t focus a lot on rehabilitation in our society today,” King said.
TMZ adds that King “tells us someone who says ‘coon’ publicly has probably heard it frequently in private or even said it in the past, which is why rehabilitation is so important.”
