Movie Academy Relegates Four Oscars to Off-the-Air Presentations — Here Are the Four Awards

The Motion Picture Academy, which has been scrambling to find ways to pare some time from the perennially overlong Oscars ceremony, revealed which four trophies will be handed out during commercial breaks at this year’s ceremony.

“A spokesperson for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday that the awards for cinematography, film editing, makeup and hairstyling and live-action short will be presented off-air,” the AP reports. “The winning speeches will air later in the broadcast and will also be live-streamed on Oscar.com and the film academy’s social accounts.”

The plan to move some awards to commercial breaks was announced back in August as part of the academy’s vow to keep the ceremony’s running time to three hours. “In future years, four to six rotating categories could be cut from the broadcast,” the AP notes.

The ceremony is set for Feb. 24 on ABC.

  1. Another reason to not watch. At last night’s BAFTA Awards Prince William gave Thelma Shoonmaker,
Michael Powell’s widow, Martin Scorseces’ coworker, BAFTA’s highest honor for her brilliant editing and restoration skills and her love of film, her life’s devotion, but the night’s editing award had also been given offstage. Cinematography, editing, etc. What is film without these things? May as well read the book and watch music videos instead. Three hours of not even funny? Thanks, no thanks.

  2. Cancel the show ….just name the winners on twitter !

  3. In their place? More production numbers and “comedy” skits.
