George Clooney Calls for Boycott of Beverly Hills Hotel, Hotel Bel-Air and Others

Actor George Clooney is calling for the boycott of nine hotels, including the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Hotel Bel-Air, all of which are owned by the sultan of Brunei.

In a column penned by Clooney and published by Deadline, Clooney explains that the boycott is meant as a protest against the implementation of harsh anti-LGBTQ laws in Brunei.

Once the new law is passed, which is scheduled to happen April 3, “the nation of Brunei will begin stoning and whipping to death any of its citizens that are proved to be gay,” Clooney writes. “Let that sink in. In the onslaught of news where we see the world backsliding into authoritarianism this stands alone.”

Clooney adds that in Brunei “they haven’t had an election since 1962 and have adopted the most extreme version of Sharia law. … At the head of it all is the Sultan of Brunei who is one of the richest men in the world. The Big Kahuna. He owns the Brunei Investment Agency and they in turn own some pretty spectacular hotels.”

He also writes: “I’ve learned over years of dealing with murderous regimes that you can’t shame them. But you can shame the banks, the financiers and the institutions that do business with them and choose to look the other way.”

In addition to the two Los Angeles-area hotels, he lists the sultan’s other hotels as The Dorchester, London; 45 Park Lane, London; Coworth Park, UK; Le Meurice, Paris; Hotel Plaza Athenee, Paris; Hotel Eden, Rome; and Hotel Principe di Savoia, Milan.

  1. Done. Thank God he doesn’t own Embassy Suites.

  2. This is just our opinion, but we are encouraged to see a celebrity like Clooney actually care more about social causes then being a self-consummed diva, like reading about Mindy Kaling whining about losing her boyfriend or worse the Kardashians, the poster name for self-absorption in our opinion. We will definitely join Mr. Clooney in this boycott.

  3. Its unfair to put the “Kardushians” in the same light as the Sultan of Brunei …
they have created thousands of jobs in Asia to make their bags, clothing
    and trinkets ….

  4. There is a positive thing here. The rich dictators and their associates still think that the US is the best place to put their money. They will keep pressure on North Korea to not make any stupid attacks on the US where the rich’s investments will be endangered or destroyed. It has always been humorous how the Chinese and Russians have made so many investments in US realty believing that they will get a larger return; even though they promote Socialism and Communism as the best economy. Like all politicians, what they offer their citizens is not the same as what they offer themselves.

  5. Sounds like George’s intolerance and Islamophobia are showing. It’s hard to disagree with his position, but he’s sounding a little like Trump.
