Only One Blockbuster Video to Remain on the Planet

It turns out the last surviving Blockbuster Video store on Earth will be located in Bend, Ore. The AP reports that the only other Blockbuster video rental shop, which is located in Perth, Australia, announced it will close March 31.

Blockbuster declared bankruptcy in 2010, and by 2014 all corporate-owned stores had been closed, the AP notes.

“That left locally owned franchises to fend for themselves, and one by one, they closed,” the story reports. “When stores in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, shut down last summer — barely outlasting a Redmond, Oregon, store — Bend’s Blockbuster was the only U.S. location left.”

The Bend store, located in a strip mall, eventually became a tourist attraction, and business reportedly picked up.

Sandi Harding, the store’s general manager, “ordered up blue-and-yellow sweat shirts, T-shirts, cups, magnets, bumper stickers, hats and stocking caps from local vendors emblazoned with the words ‘The Last Blockbuster in America,’ and they flew off the shelves,” the AP reports. “Then, this month, she got a phone call: The world’s only other Blockbuster, in Perth, Australia, would soon close its doors. A new T-shirt order went out — this time with the slogan ‘The Last Blockbuster on the Planet’ — and the store is already getting a new wave of selfie-snapping visitors from as far away as Europe and Asia.”

  1. I’ve heard they have a fun twitter feed.

  2. This would have been great if they used the store in the film Captain Marvel.
