A new show in the works at Fox will be an aftershow with a twist: It’s built around a sci-fi thriller that doesn’t exist. Deadline reports that the network greenlighted “What Just Happened??!,” to be hosted by Fred Savage.

The series, which is also co-created by former “Wonder Years” star Savage, celebrates the fictional sci-fi thriller “The Flare.” The half-hour hybrid comedy/talk show premieres Sunday, June 30, on Fox.

“Here’s the premise: Drama ‘series’ ‘The Flare’ is based on fictional author TJ Whitford’s sci-fi book series, ‘The Moon Is the Sun at Night,’ which has been a favorite of Savage’s since childhood,” Deadline reports. “The book revolves around a solar event and its effects on Earth — specifically, the small, blue-collar town of Milford, Ill. — and slowly unfolds into a postapocalyptic battle for human survival.”

The aftershow will feature sit-down interviews with real celebrities, visits to the set of “The Flare” and interviews with the show’s fictional cast members.

The project is produced by 20th Century Fox Television, Double Hemm and The Crest Lamp Company. The series was co-created by Savage, Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein, who executive produce along with David A. Hurwitz, Jen Patton and Adam Lowitt.

  1. Barry Levinson made a very funny and underrated satire of the same name in 2007. Maybe this will bring it some well deserved attention.

  2. Give Fox credit or trying something different than another procedural or sitcom. If broadcast is ever going to compete with the streaming services it needs more original programming like this. Especially if it becomes must see viewing. Hopefully it will accomplish that.
