Sunday’s final round of the Masters golf tournament, in which Tiger Woods completed a historic comeback that many fans have thought for years was impossible, delivered big numbers for CBS despite a broadcast schedule that was dampened by the threat of rain. The network said it was the highest-rated morning golf broadcast in 34 years.

Woods’ victory in golf’s biggest event, in which he completed the tournament at 13 under par to win by one stroke over a group of three players tied at 12 under, is being called golf’s greatest comeback. Woods won the coveted green jacket for the fifth time, a tournament record 14 years since his previous Masters victory.

His come-from-behind victory on Sunday marked the first of his 15 major championships that he won when trailing after 54 holes. Woods, 43, became the second-oldest Masters champion, behind only Jack Nicklaus, who won his sixth green jacket in 1986 at age 46.

Woods has now won 15 majors, trailing only Nicklaus with 18.

The final round aired live Sunday starting at 9 a.m. ET, with the tee times moved up in anticipation of possible rain late in the day. In addition to its live coverage from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET, CBS aired an encore of portions of the final round from 3-7 p.m. ET.

“Live coverage of the Masters final round delivered a 7.7/21 average household rating/share in the metered markets, the highest-rated morning golf broadcast in 34 years,” CBS announced today, noting that its metered market ratings data goes back to 1986.

“Yesterday’s final round also is the highest-rated golf broadcast on any network since last year’s Masters final round,” CBS noted. “The final round peaked with a 12.1/28 rating/share from 2:15-2:30 p.m., ET.”

Sunday’s live coverage and encore presentation earned a combined gross household rating/share of 11.1/29 in the metered markets.

“The encore presentation of the final round earned a 3.4/8 rating/share, the third-highest rated golf broadcast-to-date on any network this year behind only the live third-round and final-round of the Masters in the metered markets,” CBS added.
