A television actress pleaded guilty today in federal court in New York to charges that she manipulated women into becoming sex slaves. The AP reports that Allison Mack entered the plea in a case involving the cult-like purported self-help group known as NXIVM.

Mack, 36, is known for her roles as Chloe Sullivan on the WB/CW series “Smallville” and Amanda on the FX series “Wilfred.” She was arrested by the FBI in Brooklyn in April of last year on charges of sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and forced labor conspiracy in connection with her involvement with NXIVM and its spiritual leader, Keith Raniere.

The AP reports that Mack wept as she admitted her crimes, apologizing to the women who prosecutors say were exploited by Raniere and the group.

Mack is quoted telling the judge: “I believed Keith Raniere’s intentions were to help people, and I was wrong.” She added: “I know I can and will be a better person.”

Her sentencing was set for Sept. 11.

“The plea means Mack will avoid going to trial with Raniere, wealthy heiress Clare Bronfman and another member of Raniere’s inner circle, Kathy Russell,” the AP reports. “All have pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing.”
