Fox Pulling the Plug on ‘Empire’

Just two weeks after renewing the drama series “Empire,” which has caused problems for Fox since actor Jussie Smollett became the focus of a high-profile scandal involving his report of an alleged hate crime in January in Chicago, the network announced it is ending the series.

The show’s upcoming sixth season will be its last, according to media reports, with Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier quoted saying today during the network’s pre-upfront call: “We are turning the final season into a large TV event. We are trying to go out guns a-blazing. … You allow fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve.”

The final season, which will be part of the 2019-2020 broadcast season, will reportedly consist of 20 episodes.

As for Smollett, Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV previously extended his option for season six. But when he was asked whether Smollett will be back on the show, Collier reportedly said: “At this point we have no plans for that.”

  1. Maybe that idiot Smollett can work in the PR department for the great city of Chicago.
