HBO Has a Surprise Hit on Its Hands

On the heels of wrapping its ratings juggernaut “Game of Thrones,” HBO has another hit on its hands. Deadline reports that the miniseries “Chernobyl” has been a surprise ratings success for the pay-cable net.

“Having seen an almost uninterrupted viewership climb from its May 6 debut to its soul crushing June 3 finale, the widely acclaimed Craig Mazin-created historical drama has emerged with a cumulative audience of 8 million so far,” Deadline reports. “That’s better than the 7.3 million cumulative viewership that the Amy Adams-led ‘Sharp Objects’ had over its eight-episode run last summer.”

The report adds: “While still out of the zone of the 8.5 million that the seven episodes of the first season of ‘Big Little Lies’ snared in early 2017, ‘Chernobyl’ is now poised right behind and may even soon surpass the 8.1 million cumulative audience of the eight-episode third season of ‘True Detective.'”

Deadline notes that while most of HBO’s most high-profile shows run on Sundays, “Chernobyl” has been carving out its legacy on Monday nights — once “a dumping ground for toxic shows.”

“When you break down the numbers of ‘Chernobyl’s’ dedicated viewership, it’s 35% linear, 13% OD and a massive 52% from HBO Go, HBO Now and other OTT platforms,” Deadline adds. “That last number is the Ace in hand for HBO and a record breaker too. No other HBO series has ever topped 50% in its digital contribution.”

  1. Maybe this will remind people why we marched in the 70’s to stop nuclear energy. There is still no way to safely dispose of waste. Because of the heat developed by the plants almost every one is near a major waterway or the ocean. Japan has been struggling on how to dispose of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant waste ever since its 2011 tsunami disaster. Hanford, WA, since the end of WWII, Sheffield. UK, since 1967, Somalia coast and numerous other areas around the world are dealing with this issue. Most of these locations are leaking waste into the ocean and local waterways; or in the case of Somalia, where waste was directly sunk into the ocean. This is a much bigger issue to the ocean and the overall environment than plastic straws. Nuclear energy is NOT clean energy.
