An Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning drama series is closing in on what will be its fifth and final season. Showtime announced that it will premiere season five of “The Affair” on Sunday, Aug. 25.

The program, which stars Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, Maura Tierney and Sanaa Lathan, has won three Golden Globes, including Best Television Series, Drama, in 2015. Wilson also won a Globe that year, with Tierney winning one in 2016.

The series “explores the emotional and psychological effects of an affair that destroyed two marriages, and the crime that brings these individuals back together,” Showtime said in today’s announcement.

The series was created by WGA Award-winning playwright, writer, executive producer and showrunner Sarah Treem and is also executive produced by Jessica Rhoades, Hagai Levi and Michele Giordono.

“Season five will chronicle the aftermath of last season’s horrific events and find the characters coming to terms with the consequences of their choices — as they make the realization that if they really want to change their futures, they must first face the past,” Showtime adds.
