NBC’s “Today” show took a trip back in time this morning in commemoration of its 25th anniversary at Studio 1A in New York’s Rockefeller Center.
You can see footage below from the show’s retrospective, but if you’re hoping to see Matt Lauer, who was a fixture on “Today” for 20 years and is one of the biggest stars in the show’s history, don’t get your hopes up.
The Decider reports that the retrospective “raised some eyebrows by erasing Matt Lauer from the show’s history,” adding that “fans watching noticed that disgraced anchor Matt Lauer was completely cut out.”
The report includes a number of tweets from fans responding to Lauer’s absence. One of them commented: “I have to say, the Today Show editing of their 25 years of …something is a master class in the removal of Matt Lauer. I actually forgot he was part of the show.”
Another Twitter user expressed strong support for the decision to exclude Lauer, writing: “Shout out to the @TODAYshow editors for putting together an impressive piece celebrating 25 Years of Studio 1A without any footage Matt Lauer. You all are the real MVPs.”
But others were not on board. Wrote a Twitter user: “Wow. @TODAYshow is celebrating 25 years @ Studio 1A & decided not to include 1 clip of Matt Lauer. He was a huge contributor to the show for as long as I watched; not Carson, not Savannah. Yes, what Matt did was wrong but him, Katie & Al helped build Today!! *turns channel*”
The Decider notes: “In November 2017, it was revealed that Matt Lauer had a history of horrifying sexual misconduct at NBC, including designing his office so he could lock fellow employees inside with him. Lauer was immediately dismissed from the show, and replaced by Hoda Kotb, but the shadow of his misdeeds still looms over the show’s history.”
The Decider report adds: “Of course, he’s not the only anchor conspicuously missing from the montage. Ann Curry, whom Lauer infamously pulled strings to fire, was also nowhere to be seen.”
