CBS Goes Dark in Millions of Homes

Jul 22, 2019  •  Post A Comment

Blackouts of CBS owned-and-operated stations and affiliates went into effect early Saturday for millions of customers after CBS and AT&T failed to reach agreement on retransmission consent and programming fees. TVNewsCheck reports that CBS O&O’s in 17 markets went dark at 2 a.m. Saturday on AT&T’s DirecTV, DirecTV Now and U-Verse systems.

CBS affiliates were affected on the DirecTV Now OTT streaming service.

In a press release Saturday, CBS said: “After months of negotiations, CBS is simply looking to receive fair value for its popular programming and is proposing economic terms similar to those that AT&T’s competitors have accepted in hundreds of our recent distribution agreements.”

TVNewsCheck notes that the outages are the latest in a series involving satellite operators.

“At the beginning of July, DirecTV dropped all Nexstar stations after reaching an impasse with what will be one of the nation’s largest station groups once it closes on its pending merger with Tribune,” TVNewsCheck reports. “And just last week, 16 Meredith stations went dark on Dish after their retrans talks stalled.”

  1. I didn’t even notice.

  2. I will be dropping directv because of this. They are still taking the same amount of money, but I am without my favorite channel?

  3. All the more reason to go buy an over the air antenna and switch sources with your remote. Easy. DONE. The HD is better on OTA than satellite or cable anyway!

  4. This post resonated with me on a deep level. Your words spoke to my experiences, and I’m grateful for the perspective you shared. Thank you for writing this.
