Mario Lopez Walks Back His ‘Ignorant and Insensitive’ Comments

After coming under fire for comments he made during a recent interview, TV personality Mario Lopez distanced himself from the comments about raising transgender children.

In a statement, Lopez said: “The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were. I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful.”

Variety notes that Lopez made his original comments during an interview with conservative TV personality Candace Owens, after she cited a “weird trend” in Hollywood in which the children of celebrities pick their own gender.

“Owens pointed to Charlize Theron in particular, who recently revealed that her 7-year-old child Jackson doesn’t identify as a boy,” Variety reports, quoting Owens saying: “Celebrities are coming out — and I know Charlize Theron did this a few weeks ago — and saying that their child is picking their gender.”

Variety reports that Lopez “agreed, saying he struggles to understand their mentality, too. ‘I’m blown away,’ he said.”

The publication quotes Lopez saying during the interview: “Look, I’m never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids, obviously, and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can’t go wrong. But at the same time, my God, if you’re 3 years old and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way, or you think you’re a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make that determination then — ‘Okay, well then you’re going to be a boy or a girl,’ whatever the case may be. It’s sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.”

His comments came under fire from GLAAD and others.

  1. sorry…I don’t understand how his comments are hurtful.

  2. Agree he was pretty mild let a kid be a kid – is this the really the kids choice / legitimate concern from the ages of 3-7 or more quest for attention from celebrity parents?

  3. This whole transgender thing is bad enough for some folks to negotiate but when it comes to children it gets even nuttier.
