Why the New ‘Cats’ Trailer Has People Griping

The new star-studded trailer for the feature adaptation of “Cats,” which you can watch below, just came out Thursday but The New York Post reports that it’s already generating a number of negative responses.

One of the biggest complaints is that the lead cat, played by Francesca Hayward, has white fur, while Hayward is black.

“The film’s trailer dropped Thursday and received a horrified reaction from viewers, who complained that the human-cat hybrid CGI is nightmarish — and outraged tweeters are claiming it ‘white-washes’ star Francesca Hayward’s face,” The Post reports, noting that Hayward, 27, is a relative unknown in a cast that includes Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jason Derulo and Judi Dench.

“A former principal ballerina for the British Royal Ballet with no previous silver-screen credits, Hayward was born in Nairobi, Kenya, before moving to England at age 2,” The Post notes.

One Twitter user is quoted writing: “So how come you can clearly see this is taylor swift/the entire bottom half of her face is visible, but you wouldn’t know the black lead was black unless you knew her already.”

The Post adds: “Hayward’s character, Victoria, is a white kitten in the original Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, but many are complaining that this is arbitrary and could have easily been changed.”

And that’s not the only complaint. “In the ballet world, people are also incensed for a different reason: Hayward is being billed as a newcomer,” The Post reports, noting that she is a renowned ballerina.

The report quotes a tweet saying: “Every #ballet fan watching the #CatsMovie trailer: What do you mean, ‘introducing’ Francesca Hayward?”

  1. Clearly these are people who have not seen the Broadway show. This is very true to the costuming and makeup that is used in the show. How many movies has Hayward acted in? Why are they not crediting the costuming of Jennifer Hudson? Instead if complaining, why are they not applauding the fact that a person of color has been given this role? If blacks are only allowed to play black characters how does that advance their opportunities. This type of thinking would mean that only white men could play 007, since the last 7 have all been white men. This kind of thinking is one of the things that is holding up progress in Hollywood for people of color and women.
