A prominent CNN on-air personality became the focus of a media feeding frenzy after he was videotaped losing it in a restaurant, apparently after a man apparently called him “Fredo.” Donald Trump was among those commenting on the rant by CNN’s Chris Cuomo — below you can see a tweet on Cuomo sent out by Trump this morning.
“The encounter between Cuomo and the man happened at a Shelter Island bar — that appears to be Sunset Beach — on Sunday,” Mediaite reports. “The video, surreptitiously filmed by the man Cuomo was shouting at, was uploaded to Twitter by a user who said he was sent the clip.”
In the clip, Cuomo can be seen using colorful language as he explains why “Fredo” is offensive to Italians. The man defends himself by saying he thought Cuomo’s name was Fredo.
Mediaite quotes Cuomo saying: “Punk-ass bitches from the right call me Fredo. My name is Chris Cuomo. I’m an anchor on CNN. Fredo is from ‘The Godfather.’”
He adds: “They use it as an Italian aspersion. Any of you Italian? It’s an insult to your f–king people. It’s like the N-word for us.”
At one point Cuomo says: “I’ll f–king ruin your s–t. I’ll f–king throw you down these stairs like a f–king punk.”
CNN came out in support of Cuomo, saying in a statement: “Chris Cuomo defended himself when he was verbally attacked with the use of an ethnic slur in an orchestrated setup. We completely support him.”
Some of Cuomo’s competition was also on his side. Mediaite reports that Fox News fixture Sean Hannity tweeted: “Good for [Cuomo]. … He’s out with his 9 year old daughter, and his wife, and this guy is being a jackass in front of his family. Imho Chris Cuomo has zero to apologize for. He deserves the apology.”
Cuomo is reportedly on a previously scheduled vacation this week, but is due back on the air next Monday.
