Kim Kardashian West has been pushing for a bill that’s in Congress, and on Tuesday the measure was passed by the House of Representatives, The New York Post’s Page Six reports.
The bipartisan resolution recognizes the Armenian Genocide and memorializes its victims, The Post reports. The House passed the measure by a vote of 405-11.
The Armenian Genocide “saw some 1.5 million Armenians slaughtered during the Ottoman Empire a century ago,” The Post reports. “The Turkish government disputes that a genocide took place and has long fought efforts for the U.S. to formally recognize the mass murders.”
Kardashian West reportedly sent out a tweet to her more than 62 million followers ahead of the vote Tuesday, writing: “This is personal for me, and millions of Armenians who descended from genocide survivors. Call Congress and tell them it’s time to act!”
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is quoted saying on the House floor: “There can be no denial of the Armenian genocide, which is evidenced by historical documentation and the emotional scars still borne by the descendants of its survivors.”
The Post adds: “The resolution emphasizes ‘education and public understanding’ about America’s humanitarian and financial aid during and after the crisis. It also formally rejects any ‘denial of the Armenian Genocide or any other genocide.’”
