Report: Matt Lauer Rape Allegation Fuels ‘Disastrous’ Meeting at NBC

“Following Wednesday’s allegation that Matt Lauer raped a co-worker, there was a ‘disastrous’ and ‘heated’ meeting at NBC on Thursday morning, we’re told, during which senior correspondents ‘attacked’ the network’s news chief, Noah Oppenheim,” The New York Post’s Page Six reports, citing unspecified sources.

During the regular 9 a.m. editorial meeting, Oppenheim was reportedly pressed on what network executives knew about the situation before it became public, and whether Brooke Nevils, Lauer’s accuser, used the word “assault” when she reported the alleged incident to NBC’s HR department in 2017.

“Sources say Oppenheim dodged, saying that he wouldn’t say because he believed that Nevils has a right to privacy on that matter,” The Post reports.

The report quotes Oppenheim saying Nevils’ “confidentiality is not something that I am ever going to breach, not only for her sake. The whole point of that is so she can tell her story whenever, however she chooses to and she is doing so now, I think that is appropriate.”

The report quotes a source saying that at that point, “Everyone laughed at him,” and a staffer reportedly replied, “Pretty sure she’s waived that right [when she gave her blockbuster interview to Farrow]. We deserve answers from you.”

The report also cites a network source who denied that anyone laughed, and also denied that the meeting was “heated.”

As we reported separately, Lauer has strongly denied Nevils’ allegations, releasing a 1,400-word letter on the subject Wednesday. Click here to read the letter in full.
