World Series on a Record Pace — and Not in a Good Way

This year’s World Series, in which the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals are scheduled to face off in Game 6 Tuesday night, has the dubious distinction of potentially being the least-watched World Series ever, the AP reports, citing Nielsen ratings data.

“Fans in Washington and Houston may be excited, but the rest of the country is reacting to the World Series with a collective yawn,” the AP reports. “Through the first five games, the World Series has been averaging 11.6 million viewers, the Nielsen company said. That puts it on pace to be the least-watched Fall Classic ever, although ratings tend to pick up when a series reaches a sixth or deciding seventh game.”

The report notes that the previous low was in 2012, when the San Francisco Giants’ four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers averaged 12.64 million viewers.

“From an audience perspective, the Series was really hurt Sunday night, when 18.3 million people watched an NFL game between Green Bay and Kansas City compared to the 11.4 million who tuned into baseball at the same time,” the AP reports. “That’s the widest viewership margin a Sunday night football game has ever had over a World Series game since the NFL began the schedule in 2006.”

After falling behind 2-0 early in the Series, Houston won the next three games to take a 3-2 lead. The Astros could end the Series in six games with a win tonight.

  1. If the Cubbies played, alot of excitement and coverage would have taken place.

  2. Alas, the Cubbies just ain’t that good and the Dodgers and Yankees stumbled.

  3. They play at Christmas, to many games

  4. And yet, Major League Baseball players are already saying they are going to strike after next season. They are demanding more money. Many of them make 10, 15, 20, 25 million dollars for 8 months “work” a year, playing a “sport” that is not even in the same universe as the physical and athletic skills required to play football, basketvall, or hockey. Baseball attendance is plummeting, millennials could care less and do not follow Major Lesgue Baseball, TV ratings are plummeting… and yet the players are demanding more money!!… The Fat Lady is warming up, and the next economic downturn will be the end of Major League Bsseball as a spectator sport.

  5. It is hard to watch anything for 4 hours.
