Hulu Jacks Up Price of Live TV Service

For the second time in less than a year, Hulu is hiking the price of its Hulu With Live TV service. Variety reports that the streamer is raising the price of the base package of 60-plus live channels by 22%, to $54.99 a month.

The new price goes into effect Dec. 18 for all customers, with the change reflected for current subscribers in subsequent billing cycles, the report notes.

In announcing the increase Friday, Hulu said: “The new price better reflects the substantial value of Hulu + Live TV and allows us to continue offering all of the popular live news, sports and entertainment programming included in the plan.”

Variety notes that the previous price hike for the live-TV bundle took place in January 2019, when it went up from $40 to $45 per month.

“Once seen as a lower-cost option to pricey and overstuffed traditional cable and satellite TV bundles, ‘virtual’ pay-TV services have ultimately faced the same economics that have held in the industry for years — in which programmers demand higher carriage fees, leading to regular price increases for consumers,” Variety reports.
