A number of TV outlets are jumping into the “Star Wars” universe ahead of the hotly anticipated premiere of Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” The movie, the ninth and final installment of the core three “Star Wars” feature film trilogies, premieres Friday, Dec. 20.
Deadline reports that ABC will air a “Star Wars”-focused prime-time “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” special on Dec. 16 featuring director JJ Abrams and cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Kelly Marie Tran and Keri Russell. One of the bits will be a game of “Force Family Feud.”
Separately, TNT announced it will run a “Star Wars” movie marathon on back-to-back weekends from Friday, Dec. 13, through Sunday, Dec. 29.
“Turner’s 2016 $250 million+ mega-deal with Disney, which granted it the rights to show 10 ‘Star Wars’ movies on cable networks TNT and TBS and online until 2024, came under scrutiny last year, ahead of the launch of Disney+,” Deadline notes. “At that time, Disney reached out to Turner to try and buy back the TV rights to the movies. Ultimately, an agreement for the streaming rights was reached, with all ‘Star Wars’ movies set to launch on Disney+ within the first year.”
