A television special premiering next month examines the historical event that has been credited with triggering the birth of tabloid headlines. The event is the Battle of Little Big Horn, and ViacomCBS’s Smithsonian Channel announced details today about its special premiering Monday, Jan. 13.
“‘Battle of Little Big Horn’ explores how the proliferation of the telegraph and burgeoning newspaper industry led to a simultaneous news break across the country,” Smithsonian Channel says in today’s announcement. “The inaccurate and dramatized reporting resulted in an American public both outraged and captivated; with no white survivors left to tell the tale, a decisive 19th-century conspiracy theory was born.”
