World Series on Track to Become Lowest Rated in History

Interest in this year’s World Series doesn’t appear to be quite what it would be with a major-market team like a New York or Boston involved. USA Today reports that overnight ratings for Fox’s Wednesday broadcast of Game 1 between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals were 8% below last year’s Game 1 overnights.

The story notes that last year’s Series ended up tied for the lowest-rated World Series ever. Doing the math, USA Today says it’s likely this year’s Series will set a new ratings low.

Last night’s broadcast pulled in a 9.6 overnight rating — meaning 9.6% of TV households in the 56 metered markets were tuned in, the story reports. Despite the low ratings, it was a close game, with both teams still in it until the final out. St. Louis won 3-2.

Even so, Fox will be hoping for a long Series, as ratings typically get better the longer a Series goes.

ABC’s "Modern Family" appeared to beat the World Series in the key 18-49 demo, according to TVbytheNumbers.com. The baseball telecast averaged a 4.2 rating in the demo in preliminary figures, while the sitcom averaged a 5.6, according to the story.
