James Caan, best known for hit movies including "The Godfather," "Misery" and "Elf" along with the NBC drama "Las Vegas," is ready to try his luck with a situation comedy, reports Deadline.com.

ABC has given the as-yet-untitled half-hour comedy pilot the thumbs up based on Caan’s star power as well as the premise.

The pilot sets up the story of Terry Gannon, a single mom who walks out on her husband and moves home to live with her former ballplayer father (Caan). When mom is coerced to coach her son’s "Bad News Bears"-like little league baseball team, she gets lured back to the world of competitive sports that she left behind, and grows closer to her father.

The pilot is being written and produced by Robb and Mark Cullen, who worked with Caan on "Las Vegas." The idea of the show fits into ABC’s inter-generational comedy slate, led by "Modern Family."

Two titles are reportedly being kicked around for the sitcom during development: "Safe at Home" and "She’s Got Balls."
