Discovery Gets Lowdown on ‘Pitchmen’
Discovery Channel thinks we’ve had our fill of shows about the fancy fellows who make commercials at high-powered advertising agencies.
The network is getting ready to launch a series about two infomercial stars who might not even be allowed into the hallways on AMC’s award-winning “Mad Men,” set on Madison Avenue during the 1960s, or TNT’s “Trust Me,” built around a present-day Chicago ad shop.
“Pitchmen,” a 13-part original series premiering April 15 on Discovery, may be about infomercials—a form of advertising much of the media world looks down upon—but at least it has the virtue of being a real story about real people.
The series focuses on Billy Mays and Anthony “Sully” Sullivan, whose names are linked to real products you can’t live without. Or at least products you don’t think you can live without at 3 a.m., when the persuasive infomercials they concoct air.
According to Discovery, Mr. Mays and Mr. Sullivan have sold millions of cleaners, sweepers, kitchen gadgets and other miracle products. “Pitchmen” will look at both the people who invent these clever creations and the guys who pitch them. Episodes follow the process from the boardroom product pitch to on-the-street reaction to filming the infomercial.
The series is produced by Original Productions, with Thom Beers, Philip D. Segal, Billy Mays, Anthony Sullivan and Chris Wilson as executive producers. Chris Rantamaki is executive producer for Discovery.

The story of the pitchman and the infomercial was also already told in he feature documentary film, "Pitch People."

Why would anyone in their right mind want to watch an infomercial about an infomercial??
Have we really sank this low?! Who is paying for this drivel and who, as advertisers, would want their products associated with this crap?
My God, I would rather watch a test pattern.
Sherry
I think it sounds fascinating a behind the scenes look at something we all take for granted. I've had lots of ideas for products and have never known how people get their ideas produced and marketed. Can't wait to learn something new.
Jeremy Lunn
The thing that you guys don't understand is that these products are used by mainstream America. People love and use these products everyday. If it wasn't for people like Billy Mayes and Anthony Sullivan many start up companies would not be able to afford to reach mainstream America. Traditional advertising is very expensive. From paying ad agencies to buying blocks of air time traditional advertising is for big business. Put your dislike for Billy Mayes aside and think about how often you use these products. These people allow small companies an outlet to reach big retail companies like Wal-Mart. In person these guys are really nice, down to earth people. Watch this show because this job as a pitch man is not as easy as you think. And like them or not you have probably bought one of their products.

Wow, I don't think I could suffer through an entire 13 episodes of this show--I already turn the channel when Billy Mays comes on to YELL at us to buy the products he pitches. They really think we will watch anything! Don't get me wrong there are other shows that are equally annoying...oh, and the Shamwow guy--there is a horrible edit in the commercial so we are made to believe it really is soaking up all the cola from underneath the carpet, but it's NOT.
Oh, and I don't own one product from an infomercial weather it's Billy Mays, Anthony Sullivan, the Shamwow guy or any other TV pitchman.
I'd rather be watching "Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe anyday. Why should we care about "Pitchmen" two guys who make more money than most of us will ever see in a lifetime (peddling crap)?

awesome
im going to watch this series and become a millionaire

Billy Mays is a disgrace to every professional Pitchman who ever learned HOW to properly use a microphone. He lacks ANY of the subtle nuances and vocal animations that can mesmarize a gathered 'tip'. Or how to insert the 'asides' that are a major part of the sell 'they always make good stuff...'
btw: The Sham Wow guy is a REAL pitchman who understands the game and the presentation. Popular Mechanics did some extensive testing on many of the TV pitched products and Sham Wow is the ONLY ONE that performed AS ADVERTISED...so bad edit or not it works for the consumer.
To have this obnoxious loudmouth Billy Mays somehow represent pitchmen and how it works is ridiculous. He hasn't a clue and turns off as many as accdidently sells. Of course he is one of the producers of this joke. As a student of the traditional Pitch, I won't be watching or be yelled at by this moron. Bobby Reynolds, David Walker, Jack Nygars and Don Driver are rolling over in the rockers.

David Walker is not in a rocker. He's still on the move; we'll be in Greeley Colorado in less than a week. I swear this guy will work forever!

I would like to reach Billy May's concerning his visit to Good Day Sacramento a few weeks ago. I am interested about a new product he was showing.
Shammy Man
This guy..."Doug The Pitchman". I have never heard of him, and I know most if not all of the "talented" pitchmen out there.
I have worked Fairs and Home Shows for a very longtime and spend many of my breaks at these live events mesmerized by "Bucket" Billy Mays. His talent is beyond the extreme in the live demo business. I learned many valuable things from him, some of which helped develop me into one of if not maybe THE BEST Shammy pitchmen ever!
As far as the "bad edit" dusing Vinces commercial on the ShamWow...well as far as I know, I started doing that in my live demos 10 years ago and it does work...just like I showed my people and just like Vince does it on TV.
Anyone in the "know" reading this will probably know who I am as you read this, and will understand what I say is the truth. Billy Mays is of a very unique and select group of talented people who have eleveated them self from the standup boxes, lights and microphones to a much better place and all of us in the industry should be thrilled for his success!

Hey everybody should just hold up a minute. First
off whether Doug the pitchman is legit or not why
would he be soooooo upset over another man's sucess? Maybe cause HE'S not the one on t.v.? Stop being so jealous, you'd get alot further with sugar than you do with salt remember that Mr. pitchman "Doug". As for Mr.Shammy man why would it be such a secret as to your identity? Are you a Shammy SuperHero? do you wear the Shammy as a cape?, or even a hat? What about a tie or vest? Well I have except for the cape part, I'll leave that up to you considering your THE BEST EVER which I doubt, but if you want to toot your OWN horn by all means lead the way. All I'm trying to say having been in this business for 25+ years and countinting is that it's about time we as pitchmen get our recognition for being professional product demonstrators instead of JUST HAWKERS. Anyone who does what we do for a living knows the feeling. Including the likes of "Ronco" and "Ed McMahon". I'm happy for Billy and Sully their paving the way for the rest of us.
My # is 484-350-9363 for anyone who needs to contact me , those of you who havn't seen or heard from me in ALL these years know who you are.
Yo Billy I never forgot about you do still remember me? and Anthony tell your brother MIKE Eddy Rabbit said what's up?. God Bless and Congrates Mates. Eddy Rabbit

I dont like Billy Mays. He sold me a 3 years supply of cock rings. After I wrote him a check for $678.95, I thought to myself, "who the hell needs a 3 years supply of cock rings?". Everyone knows a 1 day supply should last a lifetime.
Damn you Billy Mays! That guy could sell an air conditioner to an eskimo.
Aaron Ridling
Wow, comments in here are interesting. For those of you idiots that don't like these infocommercials, we would not have all of the useful stuff that we have out there today. I could even use these pitchmen to help sell dahlia tubers that I sell!
Rebecca Smith
AWESOME! I am looking forward to the Pitchmen show. Just 2 monts ago I started telling my family I need to contact Willy Mays to help me create and sell my idea's and inventions on his commercials. So I was in awe when I saw the advertisement for the show. It's time to get started please email me Willy. Thanks, Becca
Mr. Sommerville
I'm an inventor. My latest invention is the Solarville Solar Battery Charger. I just saw the ad on TV about the "Pitchmen" show. I wish I would have known earlier & I may have had a chance to showcase my inventions.Does anyone have an email address or a phone number to contact this show? Check out my web site & give me some feed back. Thanks!

Billy is a goodfella. I've known him for years. He's a great lover of people and I'm so excited for his success and TV show.
In fact, Billy filmed some of his show in Philedelpia during this years home show. We had a blast.
Quit being playhaters. Lets rejoice for Billy and Sully and their success or keep a u mouth shut.

Sorry, its Philadelphia...I spelled it wrong.
Oh and here is my email: rickyz2@cox.net
I would like to know who the Shammy man is. Lately, I've been selling the shammy too.
Any monkey can demo the shammy, but it takes talent to PITCH it.
Judy
I HATE BILLY MAYS! I won't buy any product he's selling. I mute or change channels the second I hear that grating YELLING blood pressure raising voice. Please, someone get him off the air! It's bad enough the commercials are louder but combined with his YELLING it's unbearable. Watching TV should be relaxing, a respite from the traffic, loud bass in kid's cars, sirens, you name it...that we endure out there. Inside our homes we should be able to watch a program of our choice without being assaulted by this useless NOISE.
Ricky Z
We Love Billy Mays. The man is a multi-millionaire and people love him. His commericals bring in Millions.
Do not judge.

I met Billy Mayes last year at a trade show. He gave me the words that kept me motivated. If anyone knows how to give Billy Mayes please tell him I said thank you.

I've haven't seen the show. But I do know both Sully and Billy for many years. I actually have known Vince (Shamwow) even longer. Firstly, it's all a schtick. Secondly, the three of them are extremely nice guys (once you get thru the ego - Sully...) I do have to admit 10 years ago Vince took me to the Rose Bowl where he was pitching (yes with a microphone) the "Chopper" - he was amazing to watch in action and never stopped all day. That day I learned there is true talent to the pitch, and one that shouldn't be underestimated. You need to stand out - and how that's done is individually - Billy yells, but is a gentle man in all other respects - Sully - well Sully is Sully not sure exactly what is so special other than he loves mops and light bulds - and Vince - god bless ya for finally giving these guys a run for the money! You are not a one hit wonder - (Billy) because you've been around just as long as they have - you've just found your TV ground - I'm proud to know all of you...BUT! If anyone needs to get your product in front of the powers that be - just call me - because 11 years ago I did the first show for inventors and Direct Response - In fact, Billy and Sully and I were in the worlds worst commercial produced by HSN - not sure at that time if you could give a hoot about an inventor product...but the God of HSN made you do it. So everyone out there don't think to get to them - is the only way as that is the high road-Afterall they are the face - but not necessarily the place.

I've been watching the "Pitchmen" and I love the show! Congratulations to Billy and Sully...great job guys.
I only wished I would have known about it and possibly could have pitched my product: ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wP2n24aRgko )
and get on this interesting show. It's a product that will help casino players protect their winnings, so that they won't go from Winner to Chicken Dinner.
I'm watching every episode eager to learn all about the behind the scenes that go into the making of a short form infomercial (DRTV spot).
Will there be a second season? Please e-mail me if anybody has the answer.

I have a lot of respect for Billy Mays. I have to admit that I hit mute or turn down the volume a lot of times when those commercials come on. But this guy is a true success story and is really interested in helping other people make it big as well. I've watched two of the episodes so far and have gained a new respect for him. I think he really cares about the people who he sells the products for. And, especially to Doug the pitchman, we've actually heard of Billy! Who the hell are you? I'll bet Billy makes in a week what you make in a year!
seth
?? how do you submit your product to the pitchmen???
Steve Ribs
This "This Dan The Pitchman" has some issues. If he was as clever and charming as he thinks he is - maybe Dan would be on TV! sorry Dan back to Wallmart as a greater.

Hey, I say 'props' to the infomercial world. I say hall a looooohhhhh ya! to doing it within a realistic budget. I have a patent-pending product that keeps women's boobs from sweating. That's right, you read it here first: Women's boobs sweat, and it is disgusting. I have three doctors that are going to validate my product on my website. My product and website will launch this JULY, so start 'googling' sweaty boobs!!! I'll be contacting Discovery Channel. I won't use the Pitchmen though. hahahahah. I'll be my own best Girlease infomercial QA WEEN ! ! ! "When the girls need more than a cool breeze, you can trust Girlease"

I can't believe this loud mouth bastard has a show!Thank god for the remote!!!When I hear the yell "I'm Billy..he's gone. I wouldn't listen to that loud mouth son of a bitch if he was selling life ever lasting at 19.95. YO I'm BILLY AND I GOT SOME LAND IN FLODRIA 6 FEET UNDER WATER AND SOME OXY-CLEAN TO PICK UP THW MESS!!! People stop buying what this loud mouth mother is selling, it's the best way to get him off the TV. And I don't care if Oxy-Clean is the best thing since sliced bread,I'll never buy it.Use the remote, don't buy, use the remote, don't buy.Don't tune in to the "PITCHMEN", get that loud mouth off the TV!!Boycott "Discovery" for even putting him on. What a great show, YELL and SELL! Who ever is running "Discovey Network" should be shot about "OK"ing this show
Mr. Joseph
I've been inventing for many years and have entered the market successfully with most of them. A self cleaning manure fork is my latest creation and you can check the website. Billy Mays on Pitchmen it doing more to help budding inventors learn how to sell their product than anything ever before. You may not like his delivery, but his lessons are gold. Now if only he would contact me to sell some of my products!
Tim Sayers
I, too, watched the episode. It was kind of a turn-off because of all the bitchiness at the production end. I never thought of Billy Mays or Sully as being gay before seeing them interact. Now I am sure of it. You girls go for it!
rick paige
Well I see Mr. Billy has passed! Not that I'm happy his yelling voice is gone, but I am, Discovery is still playing "pitchmen' like the loud mouth bastard was still alive. HEY I'M BILLY MAY AND I WANT TO SELL THIS>>>>>YELL EVEN MORE..........$19.95 IT's YOURS...and Sully should shut up too.
