Paula Deen made her first public appearance since late June, when her career tanked after she admitted in a deposition that she had used a racial slur. The Houston Chronicle reports that the former Food Network star was greated by cheers and a standing ovation in Houston.

"These are tears of joy, y’all," Deen told the audience of about 1,500 at the Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show at the Reliant Center. "I’ve said all along that the one place I’d want to make my first step back out is Texas. Y’all’s hearts are as big as your state."

Deen, who is from Georgia, gave two cooking demonstrations, appearing with her sons, Bobby and Jamie Deen. Fans wore sashes and carried placards with her photo to show support for her, the story notes.

"We wanted to step it up because she’s had a rough year," said fan Stephanie Young. "We want her back on TV, and we love her."
