Another Entertainment Segment That’s Fleeing L.A.: the Porn Industry

Aug 6, 2014  •  Post A Comment

As the entertainment industry sees some productions leaving the Los Angeles area, one segment that is among those fleeing the region is the porn industry, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The number of permits issued for porn productions has slumped since late 2012, with only 40 permits issued last year for X-rated productions, marking a decline of 90% from 2012, the story notes. The decline came after voters approved a measure that requires porn actors to wear condoms, the piece adds.

This year through July, only 20 permits have been issued.

“It is a cause for concern that people who are manning the cameras, lights and other things on those sets are not working anymore … it’s not helpful to have another segment of the industry leave the region,” said FilmL.A. Inc. President Paul Audley.

Where are porn producers going? They’re setting up shop in Eastern Europe, Florida, Nevada and other parts of Southern California.

“We’re not doing any production locally,” Kelly Holland, managing director for Penthouse Entertainment, told the publication. “This month we’re shooting 10 movies in Brazil. Last month, we shot five movies in Europe. It’s just too complex to shoot here.”

The piece notes that Measure B, the ordinance requiring condoms for porn actors, “has been assailed in the porn industry, which has argued that mandatory actor testing for HIV was already effective, and that the law’s real intent was to drive them out of business.”

The report adds: “Industry advocates also have argued there is little market demand for condom porn and many performers object to wearing condoms, contending they cause rashes and chafing during hourlong shoots.”

The industry is also alarmed by a state bill that would require condom usage statewide, which recently was passed by the Assembly and will be reviewed by a state Senate committee later this month, the piece adds.
