The fiercely private David Letterman opened up about his impending retirement in an interview conducted just days before his final night on CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman,” scheduled for Wednesday, May 20.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that Letterman gave Jane Pauley some insights in the interview, which was scheduled to air May 17 on “CBS Sunday Morning.”
Commenting on the Ed Sullivan Theater, which has been his late-night home for more than two decades, Letterman said: “I don’t think I’ll ever be back in this building again. Honestly. I think it would just be too difficult for me … emotionally … because I just don’t want to come back and see others living our lives.”
Letterman also hinted that he may not be finished with TV. The report quotes him saying: “I can tell you the kind of feelings and emotions that I hope will come of this. That I’m looking forward to and I think that will be fairly easy to accomplish. Getting back into television will perhaps not be as easy to accomplish.”
