Oops! Looks Like Ricky Gervais Has Had a Case of Premature Exclamation! Word From His Blog Originally Said He Was Asked Back to Host the Golden Globes Again. Turns Out That’s Not True

After the recent Ricky Gervais fiasco at the Golden Globes, it came as a shock today when word surfaced that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the awards, wanted Gervais back to host next year’s ceremony.

However, the head of the association, Phil Berk–who was one of the targets of Gervais’ ruthless humor during the recent awards presentation–said in a statement, in essence, it’s not going to happen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"There is no truth to this rumor. We have not asked him to come back. Nice try, Ricky," Berk said in the statement.

Gervais had blogged earlier today in a "diary" of his recent Golden Globe gig that "The ratings were up again and the organizers asked me to consider a third year. I don’t think I should. I don’t know what I could do better. I certainly couldn’t get more press for them, that’s for sure."

Later, after the word spread that he had been asked back, Gervais blogged, "You may also have read that I am hosting next year’s Golden Globes. This is not true. Not yet anyway.

"The TV show organisers said they were happy with everything and asked me to not rule out a third gig. However, it is not entirely up to them. The Hollywood Foreign Press and various other committees need to meet and agree. I have no idea if they want me back again. It depends whether they care about fifty delicate egos in the room or the 200 million people watching at home who want a laugh. Also, even if they did want me back, at the moment I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t do it. But I’ll tell you this. If they do invite me back and I accept, I’m going to pull exactly the same shit again or even worse.

"Once again, everyone has been warned."

The interesting thing here is Gervais’ comment that "various other committees need to meet and agree." As far as TVWeek understands, besides the production company, which HFPA hires, the only other entity involved would be NBC, which broadcasts the Golden Globes. Gervais doesn’t mention how NBC or its new owner, Comcast feel about his controversial hosting skills. UPDATE: 7:30 PM, PT, Feb. 1, 2011. It looks as if Gervais had actually spoken to NBC all along, not the HFPA. To read out updated story, please click here.
