Cutbacks Could Hurt Media Diversity

As media company slash jobs, diversity in newsrooms is likely to suffer, said Karen Lincoln Michel, president of Unity, a group comprised of associations of Black, Hispanic, Asian and Native American journalists, USA Today reports.In 2007, the percentage of minority journalists at TV and radio stations rose to 24% from 22% the previous year, but the slumping economy could dampen the progress. ” But Ms. Michel says the industry has to learn that diversity and profits “go hand in hand” and the nation grows more diverse.
