Delaying ‘Torturing Democracy’

PBS had decided to delay the national airdate for a new documentary that explores the evolution of U.S. policy and internal administration battles over the use of torture among military detainees until after the current administration leaves the White House. The New York Times reports this decision galvanized its filmmaker, Sherry Jones, to appeal station-by-station to find times on their schedules for “Torturing Democracy” before the end of the year. Many PBS stations will air the film, including New York City’s WNET-TV tonight, but a notable holdout is Washington’s WETA-TV. “Since it is a story about policy, driven from Washington, that is something I wish were different,” Jones told the paper.
