NBC Universal’s Telemundo has bought the television production rights to Arturo Perez Reverte’s bestseller “The Queen of the South,” and plans to make a 50- to 70-episode telenovela, Daily Variety reports. The novel follows a Mexican woman who becomes a top drug smuggler in Spain while seeking revenge for her drug-runner boyfriend’s killing, the publication says. “This will be our most ambitious and expensive telenovela ever,” Telemundo Television Studios President Patricio Wills tells the trade paper.
