Fox’s “House” stirred an outpouring of grief for a fictional TV character, the Baltimore Sun reports. More than 25,000 fans signed an online memorial for the character who unexpectedly committed suicide in last Monday’s episode, the side notes. The Sun notes that social media tactics today help create an emotional response from viewers who are attached to the characters in fictional stories.

In the age of social media, everyone is a fictional character. When we’re connected to each other primarily by electronic means, there’s essentially no distinction between how we interact with our friends and acquaintances and how we interact with TV characters, and eventually that translates to our emotional responses.
