Broadcasters Bet on Comedies in 2009-10

May 26, 2009  •  Post A Comment

The top broadcasters will introduce 10 new comedies for the 2009-10 television season, while many of the new dramas include a humorous tone, the New York Times reports. The trend may be spurred by the recession, the newspaper points out. “When the economy’s not doing well, you tend to have more comedies, more escapism,” Magna executive vice president Steve Sternberg tells the Times.

  1. Also keep an eye open for:
    * more low-cost reality productions bent on tapping into our inner rage. Stuff that triggers strong emotions like hatred retains the loyal audiences better than just having great scripts and actors. Sad and sick, but true.
    * more producer/director/actor triple-jobs that serve as cost-cutters rather than result enhancers.
    * less top-level, top-wage talent. The days of the $5 million per episode prime time series are off the table.
It’s not much of a surprise to find late night TV starting earlier and shortening the traditional prime time band.
