FCC’s Copps Bemoans Deregulation

May 15, 2009  •  Post A Comment

Acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps said at a Newseum forum that “two decades of mindless deregulation” has led to “infotainment, sensationalism, cable news mud-wrestling, and homogenized playlists,” Broadcasting & Cable reports. “When TV and radio stations are no longer required to serve their local communities, when stations or newspapers are loaded down with crushing debt or owned by huge corporations preoccupied with cutting costs through economies of scale, it should come as no surprise that some things precious get lost,” Copps said, the trade magazine adds.

  1. The acting Chairman has it right. The Broadcasting Business has hi-jacked by a greedy few in corporate america. Needless to say we the people have fallen victim and have been thrown under the corporate bus, yet are expected to pay the full fare regardless of the carnage.
That one owner can hold the “licenses” of multiple outlets in a single market/city is a crime.
Let us remember: “…in the public’s interest, necessity and concern”.
These mega-broadcasters MUST be broken up.

  2. I agree totally! A broadcast license is a responsibility…..not freedom to just print money.
