Sam Zell is out as chief executive of Tribune Co. but will remain chairman, the New York Times reports.
Zell is being replaced by his top deputy Randy Michaels.
Zell gained control of Tribune in December 2007, taking the company private and nearly tripling its debt before it filed for bankruptcy last year.
