Conan Makes the Case for His Next Job

Conan O’Brien’s last show Friday night drew a 7 household rating in preliminary Nielsen figures, almost three times his usual number, and performed even better among younger adults, The New York Times reports.

Among 18-to-49-year-old viewers, according to preliminary numbers from 25 major markets, the show pulled a 4.8. Only three primetime shows last week hit that mark: Fox’s “American Idol” and CBS’ Monday comedies, “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory.”

  1. Yeah, and Jack Paar was a hot commodity immediately after he left the Tonight Show. That barely lasted six months.

  2. It may be this is the best thing to happen to Conan. He is free of NBC constraints which tied his hands on the Tonight Show. Jeff Zucker may lose his job before April, or if he does last for next primetime season and that does not work – Jeff will be selling apples on Wilshire Boulvard. Getting back to Conan, FOX Entertainment will allow him a lot more leeway as to get zany, and hopefully assign much better comedy writers to his show. I’d say keep Andy, but place him on the sofa rather than the podium, that simply didn’t work. Whether affiliates give the time to FOX for Conan will depend on how much leverage FOX has on its affiliates – but I wouldn’t put Conan on until 11PM EST – that should work well.
