CBS News Layoffs Coming This Week

Feb 1, 2010  •  Post A Comment

CBS News is expected to lay off a significant number of employees across all of its news programs this week, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Some sources told the paper that as many as 100 people, or 7% of the 1,400-person staff, could lose jobs, although one network executive said the number would be much lower.

Foreign bureaus are already being targeted, the paper said. One early cut was the Moscow bureau, whose three staffers were let go late last week. The Tel Aviv bureau also lost some part-time employees, leaving it with just one staffer.

  1. Why don’t they save money and cut Katie, take that 15-20 million a year and put it back into salaries to keep the workers working?
The last thing CBS News needs right now in this busy, global world of news is less staff.
Katie was a bad decision and instead of taking solid action, here we are years later with poor ratings and now the promise of cutbacks?
They’ve got a good pool from which to choose a solid, affordable anchor…just do it already!

  2. I agree with Peter; and while we are at it, what’s with this total
‘chickification’ policy? Every few days up pops another one while the “indispensible” Katie takes yet another day off. Why can’t they find another Ed Morrow, or Lowell Thomas, instead of these squeeky-voiced pretty airheads?

  3. Katie an airhead? You give her too much credit…

  4. Sorry I didn’t mean to imply that Katie is an airhead, although 15Mil sseems a little much for what CBS is getting.
Actually I was referring to all the local stations with their pretty young things trying to look serious and knowledgeable. Of course, their pretty-boy partners with their model/posing air is even more a sign of how far news has sunk.

  5. Great post!

  6. Way to focus and straight to your point, i love it. Keep up the work people. Dont let anyone stop us bloggers.

  7. Interesting layout on your blog. I really enjoyed reading it and also I will be back to read more in the future.
