The much ballyhooed debut of Ellen DeGeneres on Fox’s "American Idol" Tuesday, Feb.9, lifted the show 12% to a 10.1 in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic over last week’s episode.
The increase also coincided with the program’s first episode in Hollywood, which tends to increase ratings, making the Ellen effect on the numbers harder to nail down. Versus last year’s first Hollywood episode, last night’s episode is up 1% in the 18-49 demo. Furthermore, the show drew more viewers–27.7 million–than it has since its season premiere.
At 9 p.m., Fox debuted "Past Life," which ranked fourth in the hour with a 3.1 rating. ABC led the 9 p.m. hour with "Lost" at a 4.9 rating, off 11% from last week’s season premiere.
At 10 p.m., CBS took the hour with "The Good Wife" (3.1), followed by ABC’s "The Forgotten" (2.0). NBC’s last episode of "The Jay Leno Show" trailed the hour with a 1.8 rating.
Fox won the night in the 18-34 and 18-49 demos, as well as in overall viewers.
