Tom Brookshier, a star of the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive lineup and later Pat Summerall’s partner on CBS’ pro football broadcast team, died Friday of cancer, The New York Times reports.

He was 78.

After retiring from football in 1961 due to a broken leg, Brookshier moved to broadcasting, at Philadelphia’s WCAU, and then teamed up with Summerall on CBS in the 1970s, where they worked three Super Bowl games. Brookshier continued at the network through the mid-1980s.

  1. I worked with most of the CBS Football announcing teams over many years of the NFC coverage and consider Brookshier among the best. He was a real pro, easy to work with and a great sense of humor while taking the game seriously. R.I.P., Tom.
