Sen. Kerry Wants Constitutional Amendment to Address Supreme Court Ruling on Political Ads

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), chair of the Senate Communications Subcommittee, wants a constitutional amendment to say that corporations don’t have the free speech rights of individuals when it comes to political ads, as the Supreme Court recently ruled, B&C reports.

As a stop gap during the long process to get an amendment, Kerry said the committee should legislate tighter rules on disclosures and disclaimers governing political advertising, and give company shareholders more of a voice in corporate campaign speech.

Meanwhile Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), said he plans to introduce legislation that would overhaul campaign finance.
